Open your Records tab and you may find no Club Speed plate at all. Not a zero, not a dash — nothing where the plate would be. That is the honest behavior, and this piece is about why.
First, a word about words. Swing speed and club speed are the same measurement: how fast the head is traveling right before it hits the ball. "Swing speed" is what golfers say; "Club Speed" is what this record and its data column are called. Same number, two names.
The ceiling, not the result
TrackMan's own definition is the clean one: club speed is "measured as the speed the club head is traveling immediately prior to impact," and it "determines a golfer's potential distance." Potential. Your swing speed sets the ceiling. Ball speed is what you actually spent under it, and how much you spend is strike quality. If you want that arithmetic — what a mile an hour buys, what smash factor does — Ball Speed, Club Speed, and Smash Factor has it.
What that piece can't tell you is whether your swing has a number at all. That's this one.
Why the bay can see the ball but not the club
Our launch monitors are photometric — cameras aimed at the strike. A golf ball is an easy thing for a camera array to solve: round, bright, identical every time, with a dimple pattern the cameras can track for spin. So ball speed comes back on every shot, always, with nothing asked of you.
A clubhead is the opposite: dark, oddly shaped, different for every club in the bag, and moving fastest at the exact moment that matters. Foresight's answer isn't to make the cameras smarter; it's to put reference points on the club. Here's their director of business development: "The optical technologies Foresight creates utilize photoluminescent fiducials (stickers) that reflect light and allow our multi-camera optical system to pinpoint the precise coordinates of various points on the clubface."
That's all a marker is — a small reflective dot with a position the cameras can solve, frame by frame. One dot on the face buys clubhead speed, angle of attack and path. Four dots open the whole face picture: where you struck it, how the face was pointed, how fast it was closing. No dots, no club data of any kind.
So most swings genuinely have no reading
Here's the fact that reframes this record. Across the session files we ingest, club speed is missing on roughly 94% of shots — the club wasn't marked, so there was nothing for the cameras to solve. Shots that reach us through the GSPro proxy instead of the monitor's own files carry no club-delivery data at all: no club speed, no smash factor, nothing about how the club arrived.
So Club Speed has a shape no other record has. If you have never swung a marked club here, you have no Club Speed record — the plate doesn't render, and the app shows you the marker explanation instead of an empty chart. If you have, the plate says how many: "measured on 412 marked swings" is a real denominator, and it can be a small slice of the shots you've actually hit.
I'd rather this wall carried a hole than a guess. A club speed back-solved from your ball speed would look exactly like a measured one, and it would be useless for the two jobs club speed has — fitting your equipment, and telling you whether you're chasing speed you already own.
The fix costs a minute and no money
Markers are free at the front desk. Ask for a set — they come 192 to a pack — and get your clubs Marked & Mapped once. Foresight's own line for them is that they are "essential for unlocking full club-face data accuracy inside any virtual golf simulator," which is the corporate way of saying the cameras can't see a club you haven't marked.
Three things switch on together the moment they're on: club speed, smash factor, and per-club strike quality. Reading the number once you have one
Your plate places you two ways. The round numbers first: 100, 110 and 120 mph are the clubs you climb toward. They're arbitrary the way breaking 90 is arbitrary, which is to say golfers feel them anyway. Then the brass mark — 113 mph, TrackMan's classic PGA Tour driver club speed, and the reference every speed tile here has always used. TrackMan's currently published tour figure is higher: 115 mph. Read the tour as a band from 113 to 115 rather than a line, and don't lose a Tuesday over two miles an hour.
Say your record reads 109. You're through the 100 club, a mile short of the 110 club, four under the classic tour number — a genuinely strong swing. It's also the least useful fact on the plate, because 109 is what your best marked swing did, not what you bring on an ordinary night. Records are ceilings. Your capability numbers are what you make decisions on.
What the app does when the speed isn't there
One more place this bites. Your per-club capability number is the median of your twenty best-struck shots — and "best-struck" means ranked by smash factor, which needs club speed, which needs markers. When smash is missing, the app falls back to ranking that club's shots by ball speed: same club, faster ball, probably the better strike.
That fallback is honest, but it isn't clean. It quietly blends "struck it better" with "swung harder," which is exactly the confusion club speed exists to settle. So the app labels it as a fallback instead of passing it off as the real ranking. When you see that label, it's telling you what the missing plate tells you: mark your clubs and the number sharpens.
The short version
Swing speed is your ceiling; ball speed is what you did with it. Club speed is the one number here that asks something of you first — a reflective dot the cameras can find. Without it there's no record, and the app says so rather than inventing one. With it, the whole club-delivery picture opens up, and the price is a trip to the front desk.

Your heel strike in 2026 is the same heel strike it was in 2018, and a head that held ball speed on it then holds ball speed on it now.
