Every launch monitor screen leads with the same three numbers: club speed, ball speed, and smash factor. Most golfers stare at the first one, brag about the second one, and ignore the third one — which is backwards, because the third one is the only number that tells you the truth about your strike. Let's fix that. By the end of this, you'll be able to sit down in a bay, hit ten drivers, and know exactly what those numbers are saying about your swing.
Club speed: how fast you swing
Club speed (some monitors call it clubhead speed or swing speed) is how fast the head of the club is moving right before it meets the ball, measured in miles per hour. It's the raw ingredient — your engine size.
Here's roughly where players land with a driver, based on TrackMan's large-scale data:
- PGA Tour pros: 110–116+ mph (the modern tour average is around 116)
- Scratch amateurs: around 106 mph
- Low single-digit handicaps: mid-to-high 90s
- The average male amateur (about a 14 handicap): roughly 93 mph
- Average female amateur: high 70s, with scratch women around 90
If you swing 95 mph, you're not slow — you're a little above average. More than 40% of measured golfers fall between 91 and 100 mph, so that's the fat part of the bell curve. Knowing your number matters for one very practical reason: it drives club fitting decisions. Shaft flex, shaft weight, driver loft, even which golf ball suits you — all of it keys off club speed. When you sit for a fitting, this is the first number your fitter looks at.
One warning: club speed is the number most likely to make you swing stupid. The moment golfers see it on screen, they start lunging out of their shoes to add 2 mph. Resist. There's a better number coming.
Ball speed: the number that actually buys distance
Ball speed is how fast the ball leaves the face, and it — not club speed — is what determines how far the ball can go. Distance is a function of ball speed, launch angle, and spin. Club speed only matters because it's the budget you're working with; ball speed is what you actually spent.
Tour players launch drivers at 165–175 mph of ball speed. A typical male amateur produces something like 130–145. And here's the rule of thumb that makes this number useful: every 1 mph of ball speed is worth roughly 2 yards of carry with a driver. Pick up 5 mph of ball speed and you've found 10 yards without changing your swing speed at all.
How is that possible? Because ball speed isn't just about swinging hard. It's about how much of your swing's energy actually transfers into the ball. Which brings us to the star of the show.
Smash factor: the efficiency truth-teller
Smash factor is simply ball speed divided by club speed. Swing 100 mph, produce 145 mph of ball speed, and your smash factor is 1.45. That's it. No physics degree required.
What makes it the truth-teller is what it isolates. Club speed measures your athleticism. Ball speed measures your result. Smash factor measures your quality of contact — how close to the center of the face you struck it, and how well the face was delivered. You can't buy a good smash factor with muscle, and you can't fake it with a fast swing. A 93 mph swing flushed off the center is a fundamentally better golf swing, that day, than a 105 mph swing off the heel.
The benchmarks, per TrackMan:
- PGA Tour average with a driver: 1.49. The rules of golf limit how much spring a driver face can have, which makes roughly 1.50 the practical ceiling. Pros live at the ceiling.
- Scratch male amateurs: also 1.49. Read that again. Scratch players don't swing like pros, but they strike it like pros.
- The average 14-handicap: 1.44.
That gap — 1.44 vs. 1.49 — looks tiny. It isn't. At a 93 mph club speed, it's the difference between 134 mph and 139 mph of ball speed, which is nine or ten yards of carry. The average golfer is leaving a full club's worth of driver distance on the table purely through strike quality. Not flexibility, not gym time, not a new $600 driver. Contact.
This is my standing advice for anyone under about a 10 handicap chasing distance: before you spend a dollar on speed training or new equipment, spend an hour finding out what your smash factor actually is. It's the cheapest ten yards in golf.
One big caveat: smash factor changes with loft
Before you panic about your wedges — smash factor drops as loft rises, and it's supposed to. More loft means more of the collision's energy turns into spin and vertical launch instead of raw speed. TrackMan's tour averages: about 1.49 with a driver, 1.38–1.39 with a 6-iron, and around 1.25 with a pitching wedge. So a 1.30 smash with your 7-iron isn't a crisis, and a 1.45 with your pitching wedge isn't a triumph — it usually means you're delivering the club with way less loft than it was built with, which is its own problem. Judge each club against its own par, not against your driver.
How to read yours in a bay
Here's the twenty-minute session that turns all of this into something useful. Grab a bay, pull up the range or practice mode, and take your driver.
Hit ten balls at your normal tempo. Not your best ten — your honest ten. Ignore the single best and single worst; look at the middle. That median smash factor is your real number, and it's far more honest than the one perfect strike you'll want to screenshot.
Then run the experiment that convinces everyone. Hit five drives at 100% effort, then five at what feels like 85% — smooth, balanced, almost lazy. Compare average ball speed, not club speed. Most mid-handicappers discover their "85%" swing produces equal or better ball speed, because smash factor jumps from 1.40 to 1.47 while club speed only drops 3 mph. The math wins. That one discovery is worth more than most lessons — though if your smash is stuck in the 1.30s with a driver no matter what you do, that's a face-contact or path issue, and it's exactly the kind of thing a coach can diagnose in one look at the monitor.
Watch for the number being gamed, too. If you slow down so much that the swing gets steery and weak, you can post a pretty smash factor with pathetic ball speed. The goal isn't the ratio for its own sake — it's the highest ball speed you can produce repeatedly. Smash factor is the diagnostic, ball speed is the outcome.

Ten minutes of paying attention to smash factor will teach you more about your driver swing than a season of guessing off a grass tee.

Club speed is your potential. Ball speed is your result. Smash factor is your honesty — the number that tells you whether you're getting the distance your swing has already earned. Learn your baseline for all three, and every practice session afterward has a scoreboard.
