Open your Records tab and Longest Carry sits right beside Longest Drive, and at a glance they look like the same brag wearing different hats. They are not. Longest Drive is a driver total — where the ball finished, roll included. Longest Carry is flight only, any club in the bag: how far you flew it before it first touched the ground. If a good fitter could keep one distance number off your card and throw the rest away, it would be this one. Here's why.
What the bay actually saw
A Foresight unit is a camera system, and it is careful about the difference between what it saw and what it worked out. Foresight's own reference guide splits its outputs along that line: the launch parameters are "measured (ball launch data)," while the flight is "calculated (ball flight data) by algorithm." Measured, in the half-millisecond the ball is leaving the face: ball speed, total spin, launch angle, spin axis. Calculated from those: the trajectory, the peak height, and — in Foresight's own words — carry, "the total distance of flight produced by initial launch condition."
That's one short step from a measurement, and every input to that step is something the cameras genuinely watched. Total distance is a longer walk. It's carry plus "bounce and roll," and the roll half is modeled from the turf firmness of whichever course you happened to load. Your Longest Drive takes that apart properly. The short version here: your carry number came out of your swing, and part of any total number came out of a setting.
Why a fitter trusts carry
Sit through a real fitting and you'll notice the fitter's eyes live in the carry column. That isn't a preference — carry is the only distance number that answers the question a fitting asks.
A fitting is a controlled experiment: same golfer, same session, one variable changed — a shaft, a head, two degrees of loft. For the result to mean anything, the number you judge by must move only when the thing you changed moves. Carry does that. Roll doesn't. Load a different course and the total column shifts underneath you while the carry column sits still, because nothing about how the ball left the face changed. A shaft that "gained eight yards of total" may have gained you nothing but a firmer turf setting.
The same logic is why carry travels. If your 7-iron carries 165 yards, that's 165 yards of carry in July and in January, in a bay and on a course. Your total with that club is a local fact about the ground you stood on that day.
Scoring clubs live on this number
Down at the wedge end, carry stops being the fitter's preference and becomes the only sane number.
Rollout is a function of loft. A driver arrives shallow and low-spinning and runs a long way. A wedge arrives steeply — 45 to 52 degrees of descent — and with enough spin to stop near the pitch mark or walk backward from it. Foresight's own launch table has a sand wedge leaving the face north of 11,000 rpm. Negligible roll, sometimes negative roll. Carry and total converge, and the number you actually play to — the one that clears the bunker and holds the front edge — is carry.
So the house rule is split by loft rather than applied flat: low-loft clubs are judged by where the ball finishes, scoring clubs by what they fly. Gapping your bag walks the whole set on that principle. Longest Carry is the record that speaks the scoring clubs' language, which is exactly why it's open to every club instead of the driver alone.
Two records, sometimes one swing
For most golfers both claimable records will be a driver swing — often the very same one. People read that as proof the two are redundant. It's the opposite.
They ask different questions. Longest Drive asks how far you can make a ball finish — a question about your swing and about the ground. Longest Carry asks how far you can make a ball fly, which is a question about your swing alone. One swing can honestly be the best answer to both. A different swing can take one without touching the other: a lower, harder-running drive can out-total a higher one that beat it by ten yards of carry. And a flushed 3-wood is a live threat to your carry record in a way it can never be to your drive record.
Both go on the wall. They're just measuring two different things you did.
The 275 carry, and the carry clubs
The ladder under this record runs 250, 275 and 300 yards of carry, and the reference mark sits at 275 yards of carry — the classic TrackMan PGA Tour driver average, which the app keeps as a constant and labels as a carry so it's never read against a total by accident.
Appreciate how clean that comparison is. Tour totals against sim totals is a messy argument: those two numbers rolled out on different ground under different models. Carry against carry is honest — both came from a measured launch, and neither knows what the fairway was doing. If your card says 261 yards of carry, you are fourteen yards of flight from the tour average, and that sentence needs no asterisk.
Every distance number on your card says which one it is, carry or total, for exactly this reason. A yardage without that word is worse than no yardage at all.
Where the next yards of flight come from
Ball speed is the budget; launch and spin decide how much of it becomes flight. Launch and spin has the windows club by club — a driver's working range is roughly 1,800 to 3,200 rpm of backspin, set mostly by spin loft, the gap between the loft the face delivers and the direction the head is traveling.
But here's the part that belongs to this record and no other: the flight that carries farthest is not the flight that runs farthest. Carry wants the ball to stay up — a little more launch, enough spin to hold it there, a tall apex, a steep arrival. Total wants the opposite at the end: a shallow arrival that keeps going. Chase your Longest Drive and you're optimizing for a boring, low, running flight. Chase your Longest Carry and you're optimizing for air. That's also the tell when your two records come from different swings: the carry one is the higher, longer-hanging flight; the drive one is the lower one that kept going.
So if you want to move this number, go looking for height you can still control, and watch the apex on the card while you do it. If your spin is pinned at the top of the window and the ball balloons, that's a fitting conversation rather than a swing thought — loft, head weighting and shaft all live in that window, and we can put combinations in your hands and watch it change.
Bring the card next time. The carry column is the one we'll be reading.

Golf Balls: What You Should Actually Play
You can spend $600 on a new driver and gain four yards. Or you can spend $35 on the right dozen golf balls and change how every single shot behaves — off the tee, into the green, and on those little pitches that decide whether you make bogey or double. The ball is the only piece of equipment you use on literally every stroke, and it's the cheapest thing in your bag to get right. Most golfers never think about it. Here's what's actually going on inside that little sphere, and what you should really be playing.
