“Caley 01 - a hollow-body distance iron built for mid-to-high handicaps, KBS Tour Lite stock. Rung-1.”
The 01 is the entry point of Caley Golf's iron lineup and the club that put the Scottish direct-to-consumer brand on the map: a hollow-body, ultra-thin-faced game-improvement iron built to launch high and land soft for golfers 'whose strike pattern moves around the face.' Caley was founded in 2019 by Ryan Atha, a PGA professional who left an advertising job in London, returned to Scotland, and built the brand around cutting out retail markup — the 01 set (4-iron through pitching wedge) retailed around £449, a fraction of comparable major-brand game-improvement offerings, sold online with no in-store fitting network. It comes with KBS Tour or Nippon Modus3 shafts and Lamkin grips as standard rather than the generic steel typical at this price tier.
Not a cult classic on its own — it is honestly the most basic (least distinctive) of Caley's three iron models — but it carries real, documented recognition by association: Caley's irons were called out in MyGolfSpy's 2023 Most Wanted testing cycle and the brand has been profiled by Bunkered and The Scotsman as a genuine challenger to the majors' pricing model, which is more third-party attention than most DTC iron launches ever receive.
As a DTC brand sold without a trade-in/reconditioned retail channel, used sets circulate mainly peer-to-peer; realistic 2026 private-party pricing for a clean 4-PW set runs roughly $220–$340 (well below its ~$560 new MSRP but holding value better than a comparable major-brand GI set of similar age, since Caley volumes are lower and buyers can't simply order a new one at retail).

Mid-to-high handicap and beginner golfers who want a forgiving, easy-launching iron at a fraction of major-brand pricing and don't need (or can't access) a custom fitting. Not a fit for a low-handicapper wanting workability or tight, consistent gapping — Caley's own 01T or 01CB, or a major-brand players-distance iron, will serve that golfer better.
Launched in 2020 into a used-and-new golf market increasingly comfortable buying clubs online sight-unseen, riding the same DTC wave as brands like Sub70 and Tour Edge's direct lines. It sits below Caley's own 01T (players-distance) and 01CB (compact cavity) in the brand's ladder, and its success helped fund Caley's expansion into wedges (X1/XZ) and the 01X utility iron.
Genuinely forgiving by design: hollow-body construction with a thin face for ball speed, a thicker top line, subtle offset, and perimeter weighting to get the ball airborne even on strikes that miss center. Golfalot's review specifically flagged inconsistent gapping and reduced wedge spin as the trade-offs of skipping a custom-fitting process — real limitations, but ones that come with the forgiveness-focused design brief, not against it.
Calibrated across the whole catalog — a tour blade scores low here on purpose; it means control, not ease.
Reading is one thing — hitting is another. Book a bay and see the numbers for yourself before you buy anywhere.
