In 1983 it was built for tour-level and low-handicap swingers chasing penetrating, low-spin ball flight - not recreational golfers. Today it has no competitive fitting relevance; its only audience is collectors and vintage-equipment enthusiasts drawn to its place in TaylorMade's origin story.

• Followed, and did not originate, TaylorMade's metalwood breakthrough - that credit belongs to Gary Adams' 1979 '1 Metal' driver, nicknamed the Pittsburgh Persimmon.
• Launched in 1983 at 7 degrees of loft with dimples across the head and sole specifically to increase clubhead speed through reduced drag, at a retail price of about $230.
• Reportedly reached about 147 tour pros' bags in its debut year and, per multiple equipment histories, was golf's number-one driver by 1986.
• Credited with TaylorMade's first major championship when Curtis Strange won the 1988 U.S. Open playoff over Nick Faldo, though sources are imprecise on whether he played the original Burner or the newer, larger Burner Plus that debuted that same year.
• Gave its name to a TaylorMade driver franchise that ran continuously in various forms for over 30 years, through the SuperSteel (1999), 460 (2007), and AeroBurner (2015).

It arrived four years after TaylorMade's own 1979 '1 Metal,' the club that first proved steel could replace persimmon, and it rode that wave to industry leadership through the 1980s while rival makers were still largely wedded to wood heads. Its dimpled-sole aerodynamic concept and the broader Burner name outlived the decade, feeding directly into the Burner Plus (1988), the SuperSteel Burner (1999), and eventually the 2007 Burner 460 and 2015 AeroBurner lines.
