“Sharper aggressive grooves and five grinds. Steel-dominant identity club; a keep when the grind matches turf.”
The Mack Daddy 4, launched for 2018, was the last wedge to wear the 'Mack Daddy' name before Callaway rebranded the line as JAWS in 2019 — the mature end-point of Roger Cleveland's Mack Daddy lineage. Forged from 8020 carbon steel for a feel between firm and soft, its headline was 'groove-in-groove' tech: saw-cut, horizontally-milled main grooves plus three raised micro-ridges with micro-grooves between them, a claimed 84 contact points and about 1,000 rpm more spin. Grooves are progressive by loft — narrower iron-like 20V grooves in the lower lofts (46-52) for full-shot control, wider 5V grooves in the higher lofts (54-64) that channel away dirt and moisture for greenside spin. It came in four grinds (C, S, W and the new X) to fit turf and swing types.
Notable as a well-reviewed, tour-caliber milled wedge and the direct predecessor to the JAWS line that carried Callaway's wedge identity forward — a solid, respected club with genuine tour presence in its day. But it is not a cult classic: it was a mainstream annual-cycle wedge, superseded within a year by the MD5/JAWS, plentiful and inexpensive used. Its standing is 'good, well-made, remembered,' not coveted or scarce.
Plentiful and cheap used: realistic 2026 private-party prices run roughly $40-80 per wedge depending on loft, finish, grind and groove wear, with clean/scarcer grinds at the top. Reconditioned-retail listings (2nd Swing, Callaway Pre-Owned) show higher, graded/warrantied prices that overstate resale value. Groove wear is the key discount driver — a well-used wedge has lost the spin that is its whole point; it is a functional buy, not a collectible.

Mid-to-low handicaps who want tour-milled grooves, real spin and grind choice, and who will match the grind to their turf and attack angle — the S grind for most players and neutral conditions, W/X for softer turf or steeper swings and full-shot spin, C for firm turf and open-face shot-makers. Higher-handicap players who don't want to think about grinds, or who need maximum bounce and forgiveness, are better served by a simpler cavity-back or wide-sole wedge.
Launched into the 2018 premium wedge market against the Titleist Vokey SM7, Cleveland RTX-3/RTX-4 and TaylorMade Milled Grind. It was the final Mack Daddy before Callaway renamed the family JAWS (MD5, 2019), whose sharper 'JAWS' grooves evolved directly from the MD4's groove-in-groove work. Offered in Chrome, Matte Black and other finishes across a full 46-64 degree loft range.
Moderate-low, appropriate for a players' milled wedge, and grind-dependent rather than a single number. Wedge forgiveness here means turf versatility, not iron-style perimeter weighting. The wider-bounce W and X grinds and the versatile S grind glide through turf and are relatively easy to use, nudging forgiveness up; the low-bounce C grind is a firm-condition, skilled-hands tool that is less forgiving. A 4 reflects a competent players' wedge that is more usable than a pure tour blade wedge but still rewards a repeatable strike and correct grind-to-turf matching.
Calibrated across the whole catalog — a tour blade scores low here on purpose; it means control, not ease.
