Nobody's first week here is about hitting it well. It's about the app working out which swings were yours, and that takes a few sessions and a couple of deliberate taps from you. Here's what actually happens, in order, so nothing about week one reads as broken when it's working exactly as designed.
Day one: your shots are anonymous, and that's on purpose
Walk into a bay, hit twenty balls, and by default every one of them lands in an anonymous pool. Not attached to you. Not on your record.
That is a deliberate design ruling, not a gap. Bay hitting is anonymous by default; the app never bulk-attributes a session to whoever booked the bay, and it never nags you to claim shots. The reason is simple — a bay gets shared. Your buddy hits three drivers while you're getting a drink, and if the app quietly assumed every ball was yours, your record would be a lie built out of somebody else's swing.
So the app waits for you. The shots you deliberately log are the shots that become yours.
Two different bars, and it's worth knowing which is which
Once a shot is associated with you, it carries a confidence score — how sure the system is that the swing was yours. Two different thresholds read that score, and they are not the same number.
- 0.7 is the display floor. Above it, a shot can show up on your own personal pages.
- 0.85 is the trust floor. Above it, a shot can hold a record or feed a personal aggregate.
Between those two bars is a real band: shots good enough to look at, not good enough to have your name stamped on permanently.
There's a shortcut past both. A shot you claim yourself stamps full confidence — 1.0. So does a staff override. That's the single most useful habit of your first week: claim your good ones deliberately, and you've resolved the question the algorithm was being careful about.
Where records come from, and where they never do
This one surprises people, so it's worth saying plainly: your records are set on the range, not in a round.
Swing trends are built from range and assessment shots only. Round and game shots feed your scoring — trends, competitions, closest-to-pin boards — but they never feed a swing record. So the 290 you crushed on the eighteenth in a simulated round will not become your Longest Drive, no matter how well you hit it.
It's not arbitrary. On the range you're measuring; in a round you're playing. Those are two different activities and the app refuses to average them together.
There's also a sample-size gate. A per-club ratio record — your Purest Strike on a given club — needs at least five qualifying shots with that club before the app will award anything. Three beautiful 7-irons is not a record. It's three beautiful 7-irons.
Your handicap counts holes, not rounds
The Clubhouse Handicap ladder is counted in ranked holes, which is the part most new members get wrong.
- 54 ranked holes gets you a provisional number.
- 90 ranked holes gets you an established one.
At eighteen holes a round that's the familiar three-rounds-then-five ladder. At nine holes it's six rounds and then ten — which is the honest pairing, and the reason the rule is written in holes in the first place. Counting halves would have quietly halved the evidence behind your number.
Two more things are true of every ranked round. Only ranked rounds count — a casual round on today's course does not, and a ranked round on a different course does. And the differential behind each one is ordinary WHS arithmetic: your adjusted gross minus the course rating, multiplied by 113, divided by the slope.
So, realistically
A good first week looks like this. You play a couple of ranked rounds and claim a handful of range shots. You finish the week with no handicap number yet — 54 ranked holes is three full eighteens, and most people don't play three in seven days — and possibly one or two records, if you spent real time on the range with one club.
If that sounds slow, it's the point. Every number this place shows you is one it can defend. The alternative is a number on day two that quietly changes on day thirty, and nobody wants to be told their handicap was never real.
Claim your shots. Play ranked when it's ranked. The rest arrives on its own.

Clean Data In, Clean Numbers Out
The app hands back exactly the quality of golf you feed it. That's not a punishment and it's not a catch — it's just physics and honesty. The cleaner the inputs, the sharper the picture that comes back. Here's what "clean" actually looks like in practice, and the good news up front: none of it is homework, and none of it is a chore you have to keep up.
