The forwardmost edge of the clubface, where the face meets the sole. On irons and wedges, its height above the turf — set by bounce — decides whether the club digs or glides: a low leading edge slips cleanly under the ball on tight lies, while a raised one lets the sole skid through sand and fluffy grass first. It is also the culprit in a thin shot, striking the ball's equator and sending out the low screamer. Wedge grinds are often described by it: straighter, lower leading edges suit pickers and firm Florida turf; rounded ones suit players who open the face.
