The old term for what the Rules now call a penalty area — ponds, streams, ditches, and other marked trouble, staked red or yellow. Land in one and you can play it as it lies (no penalty) or take relief for one stroke: red stakes let you drop within two club-lengths of where the ball crossed the edge; yellow limits you to going straight back on the line or replaying the shot. Why it matters: one penalty stroke and a drop beats hacking twice from the mud — know your options before you wade in.
