A hole that bends left or right partway down the fairway — shaped like a dog's hind leg. Doglegs make you think on the tee: play safely to the corner and leave a longer approach, or try to cut the corner over trees or rough to shorten the hole. A "dogleg left" favors a right-hander who can draw the ball (curve it right-to-left); a fade player will love a dogleg right. Bombing driver straight through the bend often runs you out of fairway, so the smart play is usually position over distance.
