One stroke over par on a hole — a 5 on a par-4. Funny bit of history: "bogey" (from the Bogey Man) was originally the target score in 1890s Britain, before equipment improved and par took over as the standard. The pattern extends upward: two over is a double bogey, three over a triple. For a mid-handicap golfer, a bogey is a perfectly respectable result — "bogey golf" (about 90 on a par-72) is a common milestone.
