A long par-3 template built around one dramatic feature: a huge green bisected by a deep swale — usually 3 to 5 feet — that splits the surface into front and back tiers. The hole typically plays 210–240 yards to a green that can stretch 80 yards front to back, flanked by long, narrow bunkers on both sides. It descends from Willie Dunn Jr.'s "chasm" hole at Biarritz Golf Club in France, which C.B. Macdonald adopted and spread across America. Many courses mow the front tier as fairway, so the true test is flying a long club all the way to the back shelf; come up short and you are putting through the gully.
