A shot that climbs too steeply, hangs in the air, and drops well short of its normal distance — the signature of too much backspin, not too much loft. Tour drivers spin around 2,500 rpm; a ballooning drive often reads 3,500-plus on the launch monitor, and the excess spin converts to lift and drag instead of carry. Into wind it gets dramatically worse, because high-spin shots are the most wind-sensitive of all. Common causes are a steep attack angle, added dynamic loft through impact, and strikes low on the face. A useful iron benchmark: roughly 1,000 rpm per club number — a 7-iron near 7,000.
