Ross laid it out in 1926 expressly so the public in Wilmington, North Carolina could play a championship course, and unlike many Ross munis it got its history back: a $1.5 million restoration in 2014 recovered the original green shapes, bunkers, and tees. Golfweek ranked it #50 among America's best municipal courses, and at par 71 / 6,784 yards it remains what it always was — real architecture at everyman prices, ten minutes from the Cape Fear riverfront.

Architecture nerds on a budget, Wilmington-area regulars, and anyone who wants to learn what 'Ross greens' means for $40 instead of a Pinehurst resort fee.

The greens are the signature more than any one hole — restored Ross crowns and run-offs that reject timid approaches. The par-3s show the restoration best: small, tilted targets where a mid-iron and a putt is never guaranteed.

One of the friendlier ways to meet Ross: sandy, forgiving, walkable, and cheap. The crowned greens will confuse your short game, but nothing off the tee terrifies.
