Pete Dye's most audacious con job: in 1998 he took a dead-flat abandoned army airfield on Lake Michigan and, for plumbing magnate Herb Kohler, moved enough earth to fake two miles of Irish linksland — dunes, bluffs, fescue, and roughly a thousand bunkers (nobody agrees on the exact count). The imitation was good enough to host three PGA Championships (2004, 2010, 2015) and the 2021 Ryder Cup, where the U.S. delivered a record 19-9 rout. It is manufactured, and it doesn't matter one bit when the wind is up.

Bucket-listers, links romantics, and anyone who wants a major-championship exam in America. Bring a single-digit game or a sense of humor — ideally both.

The 17th, 'Pinched Nerve,' is the postcard — a par-3 clinging to the bluff over Lake Michigan with a waste-bunker abyss short. The par-3 7th ('Shipwreck') plays straight at the lake, and the long 18th ('Dyeabolical') has ruined plenty of good cards with its creek-crossed approach into an amphitheater green.

Honest answer: brutal. Wind off the lake, bunkers everywhere, intimidating sightlines, and a caddie-required walk. Fairways are wider than they look, but this is a bucket-list beating, not a learning course.

In GSPro and one of the best-known sim courses anywhere — the open, treeless links look translates beautifully, and it regularly makes best-of-GSPro lists. Plays hard: wind exposure and endless sand punish misses. Perfect for Clubhouse members who want a real championship test without the $700 day.
