Turnberry's second course, reborn in July 2017 when Martin Ebert and SOL Golf tore up the old Kintyre layout: every hole was new or significantly reworked, an artificial burn removed, wetlands and sandy waste areas added, and four entirely new holes built atop Bain's Hill by reversing the old routing to face the lighthouse, Ailsa Craig and Arran. Named for the Scottish king born nearby at Turnberry Castle, the 7,203-yard par 72 now rates comfortably inside Scotland's top 50, a real course rather than a warm-up act.
Anyone making the Turnberry pilgrimage: play the Bruce the day before the Ailsa. Also the value pick for golfers who want the lighthouse views without the four-figure fee.
The new Bain's Hill stretch: a par-5 8th high above the ocean and a vertiginous 9th with its green perched on the cliff edge, exploiting views to the lighthouse and Ailsa Craig that the old Kintyre routing turned its back on.
Rated difficult but distinctly gentler than the Ailsa: flatter start and finish, more room off the tee. A sensible first taste of Ayrshire links golf if the big course intimidates.
No confirmed GSPro recreation; the 2017 rebuild means older Kintyre sim files do not reflect what exists now. Members wanting the Ayrshire feel should search the GSPro lobby for Royal Troon or Prestwick instead.
Open to public play through the resort at a fraction of the Ailsa's fee (low hundreds of pounds in season). Far easier tee times; often bundled in stay-and-play packages.
