Steve Wynn gave Tom Fazio a reported $60 million and a flat, featureless patch of desert north of Las Vegas, and told him to build paradise. Fazio called it 'total site manipulation': carved hills and canyons, thousands of imported pines, creeks and waterfalls where nothing grew. Opened in 1989-90 as Wynn's personal club, it won Golf Digest's Best New Private and debuted at No. 8 on America's 100 Greatest — still the highest debut ever. The par-3 17th over a rock-walled pond with a waterfall is peak Fazio theater, and the par-5 18th plays down a manufactured canyon with a creek crossing the layup — the finishing pair carried the Tiger-Phil match. Hole after hole, the trick is you can't see the desert; every view was composed like a film set.

Generous fairways and immaculate turf make it friendlier than its ranking suggests, but water, forced carries, and length stack up. Beginners can enjoy it — at these prices, they probably shouldn't.
