Founded 1889 when the railway reached Newcastle, County Down, with Old Tom Morris paid all of four pounds to stretch the original nine into eighteen. Harry Colt's 1925 revisions gave it the present 4th and 9th. Set on Murlough Nature Reserve where the Mourne Mountains sweep down to Dundrum Bay, it's the game's most beautiful hard course: blind drives over gorse-cloaked dunes, bearded bunkers whiskered with marram, and a routing that has kept it in the world's top five for decades.

The 9th is the postcard: a blind drive over a hill that falls away to reveal Slieve Donard and Newcastle's red rooftops — maybe golf's most photographed view. Colt's par-3 4th plays across gorse toward the sea, and the bearded bunkers on the front nine are characters in themselves.

Genuinely punishing for beginners: blind tee shots, thick gorse, penal bearded bunkers, and wind off Dundrum Bay. Gorgeous to walk, brutal to score on. Better admired early, played later.

There's a well-regarded GSPro community recreation (look for DPC County Down, plus other Royal County Down builds on the community servers). The blind drives translate surprisingly well on screen since the sim shows you the line. Queue it with the wind up if you want the real experience — a fine bay-night follow-up to Portrush.
