Home of the Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers — the oldest verifiable golf club in the world, with records back to 1744 and the game's first written rules. The club settled at Gullane in 1891 on a course laid out by Old Tom Morris, then transformed in 1925 by Harry Colt, whose two-loop routing — front nine clockwise, back nine counter-clockwise — means you face every wind direction in a round. Sixteen Open Championships have been decided here, from 1892 (the first 72-hole Open) to Phil Mickelson's 2013 masterpiece, and its fairness is why pros routinely call it the best course on the rota.

The 9th, a par 5 with the grey stone boundary wall hugging the left, has ruined more Open cards than almost any hole in Scotland; the long par-3 13th sits in dunes like a natural amphitheatre; and the 18th has staged sixteen Open finishes, from Vardon to Mickelson. But the real signature is the routing itself — no two consecutive holes into the same wind.

Brutally honest rather than tricked-up: no blind shots, but knee-high rough, deep revetted bunkers and constant wind. Beginners will suffer; that's part of the education.
