In 1910 Merion handed its new course to Hugh Wilson, a 32-year-old member who had never designed anything; he studied Britain's great links for months and came home to build, on barely 125 acres of Philadelphia Main Line ground, arguably America's greatest small course (opened 1912). Its pins fly wicker baskets instead of flags — shepherd's-staff lore Wilson brought back from Britain, in use since at least 1916. Bobby Jones completed the 1930 Grand Slam here; Hogan hit the 1-iron of legend on 18 in 1950; Justin Rose won the 2013 U.S. Open when doubters said Merion was too short. It wasn't.

Architecture pilgrims and history-minded golfers above all — this is a top-10-in-the-world course where every hole has a story. Precision players over bombers.

The 11th, where Jones closed out the 1930 Grand Slam over the Baffling Brook; the 16th "Quarry Hole," with its approach across an abandoned quarry; and the 18th, playing over Hogan's 1-iron plaque. Three holes, three chapters of golf history.

Short by modern standards but merciless: tiny canted greens, wild rough, the quarry carries. Beginners would struggle badly — Merion tests precision, the one thing beginners don't yet have.

In GSPro via community recreation, wicker baskets and all. It's a superb sim test precisely because it isn't long: driver barely matters, angles and iron precision decide everything. Queue it for Clubhouse's better ball-strikers and anyone doing a majors-venues tour.
