Tom Weiskopf and Jay Morrish — the team behind Loch Lomond and Troon North — built Grandote Peaks in 1988 in tiny La Veta, Colorado, on the Highway of Legends at the foot of the twin Spanish Peaks. It's a 7,085-yard par 72 (slope 133) that mixes valley meadow holes with mountain backdrops in every direction, including the Sangre de Cristos to the west. Its remoteness kept it a secret and its fees low: this is genuine big-name-architect golf at small-town prices, and Colorado golfers who make the drive tend to become evangelists.

Value hunters and road-trippers — Weiskopf/Morrish design for municipal-ish money in one of Colorado's prettiest corners. Scenery-first golfers will be in heaven.

The holes that play straight at the Spanish Peaks are the postcards — Weiskopf and Morrish aimed the routing at the views on purpose. The creek-crossed valley holes add the strategic bite, asking for placement before the mountain-backdrop approaches.

Fair for the level of design: real yardage and a 133 slope, but valley holes give room to miss and the pace is unhurried small-town Colorado. A comfortable place to be a mid- or high-handicapper.

Fully public — book through the club or GolfNow. Green fees are strikingly low for the pedigree; the catch is geography (about 3 hours south of Denver) and a season that runs spring through fall.
