Estela was the dream of a group of northern Portuguese industrialists who wanted golf on a coastline that had none. Founded in 1987 and opened in January 1989, it was laid out by Duarte Sotto-Mayor — who began his career under Robert Trent Jones — across three kilometres of genuine Atlantic dunes north of Porto. It hosted the Portuguese Open in 1991 and the European Seniors Championship in 1994, and Golf Digest ranked it among Portugal's five best courses in 2016. This is real dunes golf in a country better known for Algarve resort parkland.

The oceanside stretch where fairways thread pure duneland with the Atlantic in constant view. Two large lakes add rare water hazards to a links, and the wind decides which holes play hardest on any given day.
