The 'Cal Club' opened in 1926 to a Vernon Macan/Willie Locke design; a year later Alister MacKenzie was brought in to redo all the bunkers and several greens. After decades of drift — including Robert Trent Jones squeezing holes in after a 1966 road seizure — Kyle Phillips led a celebrated $13 million restoration in 2007–08, taking the course back to dirt and rebuilding it in the flavor of 1928 MacKenzie. It promptly re-entered America's top-course rankings and is now a Golden Age benchmark.

Golden Age architecture students and anyone lucky enough to snag a member invite. If MacKenzie bunkering and restoration stories are your thing, this is a pilgrimage.

The 7th is the famous one: Phillips built it new on a repurposed 17-acre refuse hill, yet it reads as pure 1920s. Throughout, the restored MacKenzie bunkers and green complexes are the show — every approach asks a real question.

A demanding course — fast, contoured greens, deep MacKenzie-style bunkering, and San Francisco wind. But as a private club, access is the real barrier long before difficulty is.
