Arthur Hills, working with Stephen Kircher, opened Bay Harbor's 27 holes in 1996 along Lake Michigan near Petoskey, giving each nine a distinct identity. The Links nine plays along bluffs 50 feet above the lake in a style meant to echo Ireland's seaside courses, while the Quarry nine is carved through a former shale quarry, complete with 40-foot gorges, stone cliffs, and a waterfall. Golf Digest named it one of the best new upscale public courses of 1999, right behind Bandon Dunes and Whistling Straits, and it's stayed a flagship of the BOYNE Golf portfolio ever since.

Quarry's 8th so closely echoes Pebble Beach's par-3 7th that it's earned the nickname "Pebble Beach of the Midwest." The Links' 7th was ranked among Golf Magazine's top 500 holes in the world, and the Quarry's 6th plays a peninsula green flanked by a quarry wall on one side and wetlands on the other.

Playable for beginners on cart-friendly tee sheets, but the Quarry's cliffside carries and the Links' bluff-top wind will test anyone off their game.
