Founded in 1929 with a wink at Prohibition: the course and clubhouse sit in New Brunswick, Canada, while the parking lot and pro shop sit in Maine — so American members could park in a dry country and drink legally a few steps away, no customs booth involved. That informal arrangement survived until 2008, when the US closed the unpatrolled Brown Road crossing; post-pandemic border rules have since cut American membership by roughly 70 percent. The golf is honest woodland parkland; the geography is one of a kind.

Collectors of golf oddities — this is the only course where your pro-shop purchase and your opening tee shot happen in different countries. Also anyone golfing northern Maine or western New Brunswick.

The 9th is the novelty: part of its tee sits in the United States while the hole plays into Canada, and a few slices elsewhere can technically exit the country. As pure golf it's pleasant valley parkland; the border is the star.

Genuinely friendly small-town parkland — modest length, no intimidation, inexpensive. The hardest part of the round is the international border paperwork, not the golf.

Public and affordable — the catch is access: since the informal crossing closed, Americans must enter Canada through an official border point to reach the clubhouse and course. Check current border rules before you drive up.
