Golf started here in the early 1920s with six holes on Whidden's Intervale at the edge of town, grew to a nine that opened in 1926, and stayed that way for over sixty years. The original course was famous for hundreds of stately elms that gave it shade and strategy — some 600 were lost to Dutch elm disease. Bob Moote expanded the layout to eighteen in the late 1980s, opening in 1990: a balanced par 72 of 6,665 yards where both nines carry two par 3s, five par 4s and two par 5s.
