Opened in 2002 as the private, men-only Southern Dunes Golf Club — a Schmidt-Curley design with Fred Couples that went Scottish-links-in-the-desert: massive rolling bunkers, firm and fast turf, not a house in sight, and exactly one water hazard on the property. After a 2008 foreclosure (and a brief spell as 'Royal Dunes'), the Ak-Chin Indian Community bought it in 2010 — reclaiming land taken from the tribe in 1913 — renamed it, and threw it open to the public alongside Harrah's Ak-Chin resort. A $20M clubhouse broke ground in early 2026, with an NCAA men's regional slated for 2027.

Big hitters who want 7,500 yards of room to swing, fans of links-style golf in desert clothing, and anyone who appreciates a course with a genuine reclamation story behind it.

The 463-yard 18th is the consensus signature — the course's only water finally shows up at the green after seventeen dry holes. The 575-yard 3rd stretches past 600 for U.S. Open qualifying, the 8th is the hardest with four landing-zone bunkers, and the ~248-yard par-3 6th is a brute.

Wide, forgiving fairways and tame terrain make it welcoming off the tee; the teeth are the enormous bunkers and firm, undulating greens with false edges. In real life, the lit 6-hole miniDunes short course is the friendly gateway.
