Mike Strantz — the maverick who designed fewer than ten courses before dying at 50 in 2005 — built Tot Hill Farm in 2000 on wild, rocky terrain in the Uwharrie foothills near Asheboro, famously routing it on horseback aboard his horse Scout. The result is the most divisive of all Strantz designs: Golf Digest once ranked it the 7th hardest course in America, with boulders, streams, blind shots, and greens that demand you land within a 5-10 yard window or you're dead. Golfweek ranks it #7 among courses you can play in North Carolina. People love it or hate it; nobody forgets it.

Strantz cultists, adventure golfers, and anyone doing a Pinehurst trip (it's 50 minutes away) who wants one round of pure, unhinged art. Card-and-pencil perfectionists should stay away.

The set pieces where Strantz weaponizes the land: greens perched on rock shelves, approaches over boulder-strewn creek beds, and fairways that heave like the horse trails he routed them from. Every hole is a dare — the 'why' is that no two shots feel routine, ever.

Honestly hostile to beginners: extreme elevation, blind shots, rock-lined creeks, and tiny effective targets. Come for the adventure with a shrug about score, or build up to it first.
