Before TPC Sawgrass and the island green, THE PLAYERS lived here. Ed Seay carved the original East and West nines out of Ponte Vedra swamp so raw that the centerlines of 12 holes were underwater; the club opened in 1974 and hosted the Tournament Players Championship from 1977 through 1981. The 1977 edition was so brutally windy that Dan Jenkins called it a 'swampy, scrubby, windy, chilly, narrow pain in the three-wood.' Robert Walker's South nine later made it 27. The Tour moved across the street in 1982, but the original still has teeth.
