Two amateurs, Jack Neville and Douglas Grant, routed Pebble Beach along the Monterey Peninsula cliffs in 1919, and it became the most famous public course on earth. Nine holes touch Carmel Bay, and the course has staged six U.S. Opens — Nicklaus in '72, Watson's chip-in in '82, Tiger's 15-shot rout in 2000 — plus the 2023 U.S. Women's Open, with U.S. Opens booked out to 2048 as a USGA anchor. It isn't the hardest course in the world, but no course pairs history and scenery like it.

Everyone, once. It's the rare bucket-list course you can actually book. Golf-history buffs, ocean-hole romantics, and anyone who saved up for the pilgrimage.

The 106-yard 7th is the most photographed short par 3 in golf — a wedge (or a 5-iron in wind) down to a green ringed by surf. The 8th's blind drive to a cliff, then a second shot across a chasm, is Nicklaus' favorite approach in golf. The par-5 18th curling along the seawall is the game's greatest finisher.

Honest answer: it's playable for a beginner — fairways are reasonable and forward tees exist — but tiny poa greens, ocean wind, and cliff-edge carries punish misses. Most beginners happily trade the score for the views.

In GSPro via well-built community recreations, and it's one of the most-played sim courses anywhere. Plays fair off the mat — the challenge is small greens and the wind slider. A must-queue at Clubhouse: play the 7th-8th-9th stretch alone if you only have half an hour.

Fully public but expensive: green fee is $675, rising to $695 in April 2026, plus caddie or cart. Advance tee times effectively require a Pebble Beach Resorts stay; singles can try the daily wait list.
