Tampa's first private club, founded in 1916 and reshaped by Donald Ross in 1923; it later became the founding club of the LPGA and still hosts the Gasparilla Invitational and area Mid-Am events.

"A genuine Donald Ross renovation with LPGA founding-club history -- worth surfacing to members who collect classic-architect courses."
Tampa's first private club, founded 1916 on an original Tom Bendelow routing. In 1923 the board paid Donald Ross $15,000 to renovate; Ross kept the corridors, rerouted a little, and layered in his bunkering, with longtime assistant Walter Hatch supervising construction. Bobby Weed's 2009-era restoration pulled the Ross character back out. It is a par 70 of barely 6,300 yards squeezed brilliantly onto 82 acres in South Tampa, hosts the historic Gasparilla Invitational, and was a founding club of the LPGA.
Golden Age architecture fans, anyone curious how much course fits on 82 acres, and short-game grinders — Ross greens reward precise wedges over raw distance.
The appeal is cumulative rather than one postcard hole: a tight, clever Ross routing where short par 4s tempt aggression and crowned greens repel anything indifferent. Golf Club Atlas's walkthrough highlights how the green complexes carry the course.
Short and walkable with generous corridors, but small, defended Ross greens and tight out-of-bounds on an 82-acre site punish wild drivers. Manageable if you keep it in play.
This is the grande dame of Tampa golf, 35-40 minutes south of Wesley Chapel. Members who follow the Gasparilla Invitational can play the venue in our bays without knowing a member.
A GSPro community recreation exists — which matters here, because the sim is the only realistic way most Tampa golfers will ever see this private Ross design. Plays short off the tee but the green surrounds still demand a sharp wedge game. Great members' curiosity round.
Fully private member club in South Tampa. Access is by member invitation, reciprocal club arrangements, or playing the Gasparilla Invitational; there are no public tee times.
