Tampa's first private club, founded 1916 on an original Tom Bendelow routing. In 1923 the board paid Donald Ross $15,000 to renovate; Ross kept the corridors, rerouted a little, and layered in his bunkering, with longtime assistant Walter Hatch supervising construction. Bobby Weed's 2009-era restoration pulled the Ross character back out. It is a par 70 of barely 6,300 yards squeezed brilliantly onto 82 acres in South Tampa, hosts the historic Gasparilla Invitational, and was a founding club of the LPGA.

Golden Age architecture fans, anyone curious how much course fits on 82 acres, and short-game grinders — Ross greens reward precise wedges over raw distance.

This is the grande dame of Tampa golf, 35-40 minutes south of Wesley Chapel. Members who follow the Gasparilla Invitational can play the venue in our bays without knowing a member.
