The 'Poor Man's Pebble Beach' is two courses stitched into one muni. H. Chandler Egan — the U.S. Amateur champ who reworked Pebble itself — laid out the tree-lined front nine in 1932; in 1960 Jack Neville, Pebble's original designer, added a back nine through the dunes around Point Pinos lighthouse, where Monterey Bay meets the Pacific. For roughly $50 you get genuine seaside golf on the same peninsula where the big names charge ten times that.
Anyone doing a Monterey trip on a budget, links romantics, and golfers who want ocean holes without a $600 green fee. Also a great walking course for seniors and juniors.
The stretch from 11 through 16 on the Neville nine is the whole point: dune-framed holes wrapping around Point Pinos lighthouse with the Pacific crashing beyond. The par-3s out there play wildly different depending on wind.
Very friendly: short yardage, wide muni corridors, relaxed vibe. The dunes back nine gets windy and the ice plant eats balls, but nothing here punishes a new player badly.
