A municipal course originally named LeJeune, renamed for city manager Melvin 'Mel' Reese in 1973; became the center of a high-profile fight over Inter Miami CF's stadium redevelopment plans and has since closed for that project.
This course is in our GSPro library — pull it up in any bay and play it wall to wall.
"Good context for soccer-following members — this is the muni course that got torn up for David Beckham's Inter Miami stadium site, so the GSPro version may be the only way to play it again."
Miami's storied city course opened in 1961 as LeJeune Golf Course, designed by Dick Wilson and Joe Lee, was renamed for city manager Melvin Reese in 1973, and after decades of decline got a $3.5M Charles Mahannah rebuild, reopening in 1997 as International Links Miami. For years it was the city's only municipal course and home of First Tee Miami. Then Lionel Messi happened: the course closed in March 2023 to make way for Miami Freedom Park — Inter Miami's 25,000-seat stadium, hotels and retail. Melreese is gone; the golf now exists only in memory and in the simulator.
Anyone with Miami golf memories, First Tee alumni, and completists who like playing courses that no longer exist — a genuinely unique category.
Its claim to fame was civic rather than architectural: a Wilson/Lee pedigree, decades of Miami junior golf, and the strange honor of being traded for Messi. The lake-guarded closing holes were the on-course highlight.
When it existed it was classic friendly Florida muni golf — flat, open, walkable, junior-program central. In the sim it remains one of the gentler Florida layouts.
A Florida time capsule: Miami's lost muni, preserved in the sim. For Tampa-area members it's a conversation-starter round — no drive down I-75 required or even possible.
In GSPro via community recreation — and that's the whole hook: this is ghost golf, a real course you can now ONLY play in a bay. Queue it for the novelty night: "this fairway is currently a soccer stadium."
You can't — the course closed permanently in March 2023 and the land is becoming Miami Freedom Park, Inter Miami's stadium district. The simulator is now the only tee time available.
