Larry Packard's masterpiece, opened 1974, and the biggest feather in a 600-course career he finished as an Innisbrook resident — he lived on property until his death at 101 in 2014. Copperhead is the annual host of the PGA Tour's Valspar Championship (at Innisbrook since 2000) and routinely ranks among the Tour's toughest non-major venues. The shock is the land: rolling, pine-lined terrain that feels like the Carolinas, not coastal Florida. The finish — holes 16 through 18, the "Snake Pit" — decides the tournament most Marches.
Anyone who wants to walk in Tour players' footsteps without a badge — it's the most accessible true PGA Tour venue in the Tampa Bay area. Bucket-list material for locals.
The Snake Pit: 16 is a long, water-guarded par 4; 17 a bruising ~200-yard par 3; 18 an uphill par 4 to a green that rejects timid approaches. Packard sequenced them so a good round can die in 40 minutes — that's why the Valspar so often turns there.
A Tour-caliber test: tree-lined corridors, doglegs that demand shaped tee shots, and a brutal finishing stretch. Beginners can enjoy it from the forward tees but should expect a big number or two.
This is the local major: Palm Harbor is about 45 minutes from Wesley Chapel, and the Valspar Championship each March is the closest PGA Tour stop to the Clubhouse. Play it in the bay, then go watch the pros try it.
A community GSPro recreation exists — sim leagues have staged Valspar-week events on it — though it's not on the basic public server list, so it may take a Patreon-tier download.
