Alister MacKenzie's 1929 masterpiece, built with Robert Hunter after original architect Seth Raynor died mid-project. Founder Marion Hollins famously proved the 16th's ocean carry was possible by teeing up a ball and driving it to the proposed green site herself. The routing moves through three worlds — inland dunes, Monterey pine and cypress forest, then out onto the Pacific cliffs for the 15-16-17 finish. It trades places with Pine Valley atop nearly every world ranking, and at roughly 6,500 yards it proves greatness has nothing to do with length.

Architecture obsessives, bucket-listers, and anyone who wants to understand why MacKenzie is revered. If a member ever invites you, cancel whatever else you had planned.

The 15th, a jewel-box par 3 over a churning cove; the 16th, golf's most photographed hole, 230 yards of pure Pacific carry born from Marion Hollins' vision; and the 17th, a cliff-edge par 4 played around a stand of cypress. Three straight holes with a legitimate claim as the best coastal stretch in golf.

The course itself is shortish and fair by top-100 standards, but the 16th's 230-yard all-carry over the Pacific spares nobody. Access, not difficulty, is the real barrier — which is exactly why the sim matters.
